Truck drivers make up a large portion of the workforce that sustains the economy. Truck drivers are responsible for shipping important goods, such as medication, food and clothing throughout the United States. Without truck drivers, many communities would go without key goods.

Many truck drivers face serious injuries while on the job. Injured truckers may be eligible for workers’ compensation benefits. These benefits can help cover lost wages and medical expenses. Here are a few common workplace hazards truckers face:

1. Auto accidents

One of the major dangers for truck drivers is auto accidents. Auto accidents can be caused by many reasons, such as distracted driving, substance use, road rage and negligence. In a truck driving accident, truckers can face traumatic spine and brain injuries.

2. Prolonged sitting

Truckers are often expected to sit in a stationary position for many hours to complete their duties. As a result, many truckers face prolonged sitting injuries. These injuries can lead to joint and bone conditions, poor blood pressure, diabetes and back pain.

3. Overexertion

While many truckers are only responsible for shipping goods, many are responsible for lifting heavy cargo. Repetitive movements can lead to overexertion, which can lead to muscle strain, sprains and joint issues.

4. Hazardous chemicals

Some truckers are responsible for shipping hazardous chemicals. If a trucker is exposed to hazardous chemicals at any time, they could suffer from long-term disabilities, such as respiratory issues, burns and cognitive conditions.

5. Psychological conditions

Trucking is often an isolated job. Furthermore, many truckers are pushed to their limits to meet deadlines. As a result, truckers may develop psychological conditions, including post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety, insomnia and depression. These cognitive conditions can affect a trucker’s ability to work.

Truckers who have faced workplace injuries can seek legal guidance to help them apply for workers’ compensation benefits.
