People who work in the manufacturing industry often face a variety of hazards as they work. One of these involves danger to their eyes. It’s critical that anyone who’s working around chemicals or any manufacturing process that involves shaving, cutting or flying debris takes steps to protect their eyes.
It’s estimated that around 90% of eye injuries at work could be prevented with proper eye protection. This can include goggles, face shields or safety glasses. Some manufacturing positions, such as those involving welding, may require full helmets or shields with specialized filters to protect the eyes.
Eye health is important
Individuals who work in manufacturing shouldn’t ever try to push through a possible eye injury. Anytime there’s a potential eye injury, they should ensure they get proper eye care.
Workers who are around chemicals should know what to do if they get the chemical in their eyes. This might involve using an eyewash station, which should be located centrally so there’s no delay for the worker to access it.
Of the nearly 2,000 work-related eye injuries that occur daily, around 100 of them result in the worker having to miss one or more days on the job. In some cases, the damage is permanent and results in the worker either being unable to work completely or unable to return to their former position.
Workers’ compensation coverage can help these workers to get the medical care they need. It can also assist with other benefits, such as partial wage replacement if the worker has to remain off work for a considerable time or vocational rehab if the worker needs to change job duties.
