Road construction workers face dangers on every shift

People count on roads to be in good condition so they can travel safely from one destination to the next. Even though they know that this takes skilled labor, some people don’t realize that those road construction workers face hazards on each shift.

Unlike other job sites, there are some significant dangers that they face on every shift. These include working near moving traffic, around heavy machinery and in unpredictable conditions. These hazards can lead to serious injuries if safety measures aren’t strictly followed.

Exposure to traffic

One of the biggest risks on a road construction site is traffic. Even when there are traffic cones, barriers and signs around the job site, it’s possible for impatient or distracted drivers to crash into work zones without warning. Workers are especially vulnerable when visibility is low, during nighttime operations and in high-speed zones. High-visibility clothing, flaggers and traffic control plans can help to keep workers safe, but there’s still a risk.

Heavy equipment and moving machinery

Road construction involves constant interaction with heavy machinery, such as dump trucks, backhoes, rollers and pavers. All of these machines have large blind spots, so operators can’t always see workers. Communication between all crew members and the equipment operators is critical, so proper safety protocols should be in place and enforced.

Slips, trips and falls

Uneven ground, loose gravel, and open trenches are all common on roadwork sites. Add in rain or spilled materials, and the risk of slipping or falling increases. Workers should wear sturdy, slip-resistant footwear and always watch their footing—especially around excavation zones or recently poured materials.

When hazards lead to an on-the-job injury, the injured worker will need immediate medical attention. Workers’ compensation should cover that cost, as well as specific other expenses. Construction workers who are dealing with this situation should seek assistance with their claim so they can ensure they’re receiving the benefits they’re due.
